What is Charcoal? Charcoal is made from organic materials that have been burned or finely ground. Ground charcoal is compressed and held together by a binder. The three main types of charcoal are pencil, stick and willow charcoal. This medium is used for rough sketching or to create works of art with strong light and shade contrast.
